What is a Vesak thorana?

A Vesak thorana is a Sri Lankan Vesak tradition: a large decorated archway or pandol outlined by hundreds of coloured bulbs that blink in choreographed "chase" sequences, displaying illustrated panels that tell a Jataka story — a tale of one of the Buddha's previous lives. Thoranas are erected for Vesak, the Buddhist festival marking the birth, enlightenment, and passing of the Buddha on the May full-moon Poya day, and are viewed at night accompanied by devotional music (bhakti gee). This site is an online / virtual Vesak thorana: an illustrated Jataka archway traced by animated lights that you can view in any browser.

බුදුරජාණන් වහන්සේ උම්මග්ග ජාතකය දේශනා කරමින්, ප්‍රඥාව, ධෛර්යය සහ ධර්මයේ මහිමය ලොවට පෙන්වා වදාළ සේක.

The Ummagga Jātaka tells of Mahaushadha Pandita (මහෞෂධ පණ්ඩිතයා), the supremely wise advisor to King Vedeha of Mithila. King Chulani of Panchala and his minister Kevatta plot to capture King Vedeha with a false marriage invitation. Foreseeing the trap, Mahaushadha secretly builds a great tunnel (ummagga) with hidden doors and chambers. When the army surrounds the king, the tunnel delivers him and his people to safety — and even brings Chulani's own family to him — so that wisdom wins without bloodshed and peace is made between the two kings.

  1. ප්‍රඥාවන්ත උපදේශකයා — මිථිලා රාජ්‍යයේ විදේහ රජුට, ප්‍රඥාවන්ත මහෞෂධ පණ්ඩිතයා නුවණින් යුත් උපදෙස් ලබා දුන්නේය. (The wise advisor Mahaushadha counsels King Vedeha of Mithila.)
  2. කුමන්ත්‍රණය — පංචාල රාජ්‍යයේ චූලනී රජු හා කේවට්ට අමාත්‍යවරයා, විදේහ රජු අල්ලා ගැනීමට රහසේ සැලසුම් කළහ. (King Chulani and minister Kevatta secretly plot to capture King Vedeha.)
  3. ව්‍යාජ ආරාධනය — චූලනී රජුගේ දියණිය විවාහ කර දීමට යැයි කියමින්, විදේහ රජුට ව්‍යාජ ආරාධනයක් යවන ලදී. (A false marriage invitation is sent to lure King Vedeha.)
  4. උම්මග්ගය ඉදිකිරීම — මෙය උගුලක් බව දැනගත් මහෞෂධ පණ්ඩිතයා, රහසිගත උමඟක් ඉදිකිරීමට කටයුතු කළේය. (Sensing the trap, Mahaushadha begins a secret tunnel.)
  5. අලංකාර උමඟ — උමඟ තුළ සිතුවම්, පහන් හා රහස් දොරටු සහිත අලංකාර මන්දිරයක් නිර්මාණය කරන ලදී. (A magnificent tunnel-palace with murals, lamps and hidden doors is built.)
  6. උගුල ක්‍රියාත්මක වීම — විදේහ රජු පංචාලයට පැමිණි විට, චූලනී රජුගේ හමුදාව ඔහු වටලා ගත්තේය. (When King Vedeha arrives, Chulani's army surrounds him.)
  7. රහස් දොරටුව — මහෞෂධ පණ්ඩිතයා රහස් යන්ත්‍රයක් ක්‍රියාත්මක කර, උමඟට පිවිසෙන සැඟවුණු දොරටුව විවෘත කළේය. (Mahaushadha opens the hidden door to the tunnel.)
  8. මහා ගැලවීම — විදේහ රජු සහ ඔහුගේ පිරිස, ආරක්ෂිතව උමඟ ඔස්සේ පිටව ගියහ. (King Vedeha and his people escape safely through the tunnel.)
  9. නුවණැති උපක්‍රමය — මහෞෂධගේ සෙබළුන්, චූලනී රජුගේ පවුල ආරක්ෂිතව උමඟ වෙත රැගෙන ආහ. (Mahaushadha's men bring Chulani's family to safety.)
  10. නුවණේ ජයග්‍රහණය — මහෞෂධ පණ්ඩිතයාගේ නුවණ හමුවේ චූලනී රජු පරාජය වූ අතර, දෙරජුන් අතර සාමය ඇති විය. (Wisdom triumphs; peace is made between the two kings.)
